My garden neighbor and I have spent a healthy amount of time in our backyard over the course of several non-consecutive weekends, trying to whip our poor neglected space back into something resembling the garden of last year. But better. And bigger. This year we’ve got new garden plans, helped along by my friend Deborah Lewis, of Urban Veggie Starts. Deborah came by a few weeks ago to check out the sorry state of the weed-filled raccoon playground we call a backyard. Deborah did a little weeding (I swear I told her to stop it) and helped make a plan for the vegetable beds and containers in the sunniest sections of the yard.
With a little encouragement, a to-do list in hand, and a sketched out garden plan, Deborah gave me a step-by-step guide with a timeline, to help us get our shit together for the glorious happy hours and garden parties we’ve got planned for our little backyard space. In the weeks since, our “garden” is getting a little more garden-y, as our beans, sunflowers, morning glories and vegetables are starting to sprout. We’re trying to be vigilant this year, with row cover, BT, and some caterpillar and snail hunting. We’re finally in control of all those weeds out there, and have put our seeds and starts in the ground.

And now, a few weeks later:

What a transformation! It really gets you enthused when you see things starting to grow – I love growing things I can eat! Looking forward to seeing what does well and what doesn’t (fingers crossed – I’m sure it all will!). Cath..
It is very encouraging to see the new growth! Every time I go out to the yard I feel like there are new developments and progress… little by little it is happening!
